Pondering Friendship

It’s wonderful to have friends who are there
Friends who listen, who really care
But are you there when they need you?
Because that’s what makes a friendship true.

Sometimes people come in to our lives not only because we need them, but because they need us, as if our guardian angels and spirit guides had aligned the stars for us to meet at the right time. Mutual support and love are the mark of a beautiful friendship, the kind that sadly seems increasingly rare these days.

Sometimes people come to us in different incarnations. This life’s may not be the one we remember, but learn to cherish it for what it is as love and/or friendship come in many different guises.

During those times in your life when you feel guilty because you’re relying on others for support, remember that in a good friendship we give each other what we can when we can and that support comes in many forms – be it financial, emotional or intellectual – and that neither is more valuable than the other. It is the simple act of giving that makes it so precious. A true friend supports you not because they expect something in return, but because they see a light within you that they do not wish to see extinguished.

The best friends listen unconditionally without judging because they will never be in your shoes. They tell you what you need to hear instead of what you want to hear and make you realize when you need to be more selfish and stop beating yourself up over something that there’s no point blaming yourself for.

Some friendships are like snowflakes
Fragile and fleeting
Blink and they’re gone
But ’twas a beautiful meeting.

How blessed I am to have such friends who accept me for who I am
Who realise that I’m not perfect
But don’t really give a damn
Who listen to me and know the real me and how I’m feeling inside
Because they can read me like a book
And there’s nothing I can hide
Who open their hearts and give me their trust
And I can trust them too
To talk so freely about everything
Is a gift shared by so very few
